2010 Weather Review

Weather was in the news a lot during 2010, there has been "odd" weather all over the globe with floods in Thailand, Australia, USA and the worst in Pakistan. The floods in Thailand started in the North of the country affecting huge areas, and then later there was a big low pressure system over Southern Thailand which cause big floods in Hat Yai, Pattani, Koh Samui, Songkhla and other southern areas. In Phuket we were all waiting for this big storm but Phuket was totally unaffected! I mean, yes we got some rain from the 1st - 3rd November, but nothing like what was predicted. Phuket just does not get really bad weather. I mentioned this earlier this year : Phuket is NOT a rainy place.

We have had odd rainfall in 2010. You know it's an odd year when December is wetter than August or May... I keep telling people to come to Phuket in low season, the weather is often nice, just don't count on it... and if your plan is just to sit on the beach then low season is not to good since the prevailing winds blow onto the beaches and waves can be quite big. But if you want to explore Phuket and the surrounding area, low season is great. And anyway, you can't count on the weather in December either, so it seems!

Phuket Rainfall 2010

January 2010 was actually very dry - it only rained on 6 days, but a couple of those were unseasonably wet and the rainfall of 119mm was the wettest for at least 10 years! We also had the driest May for 10 years followed by the wettest June for more than 10 years! And August, September and October were all drier than average.. compensated for by wetter than average November and December. In fact December was another "wettest for at least 10 years" month. All mixed up. You can see more details and read reports from every month - see the Phuket Weather Archives link at the top of the page...

January 1st - Happy New Year everyone! Today is 1-1-11. We were out at a little party last night, and as we left with 2 sleepy children, the clock in the car showed the time 1:11. Our sons birthday is 11-1-11. This is a year for number ones. I am looking forward to it... and so far it's a sunny year. We'll surely be at the beach later. Welcome to 2011!

Hi Jamie we are thinking of sailing around phuket in august for a week thru sunsail. are we crazy? Is the weather generally too rainy and windy? we know we cannot sail to the similian islands or the west side of phuket-but there seems to be many other places to visit. Thanks, Andrea

August should be OK if you stick in Phang Nga Bay where things are fairly sheltered. Do expect some rain, but unlikely to be anything too bad. Go for it!

Hi Jamie

Excelllent and informative site! Thanks.

I am planning a trip to Phuket (Karon or Kata) in May this year (26 May - 4 Jun) simply because its cheaper for me.

I will be travelling with my wife and 17 month old daughter. Can you suggest what to pack for the little one? What hotel would you recommend for travellers with small kids? Also, should we expect rain every day?

Thanks again
From South Africa

Hello from Thailand to SA...

You will not get rain every day, whatever a kids needs can be got here, I know since I have 2 kids. There are big big superstores like Tesco Lotus, Big C.. you need milk, nappies, whatever.. most of that you can get in the nearest 7-11 too. 17 months = 1 1/2 year old girl, she can stay wherever you stay and she'll love it so long as she's with you.

Hi, my boyfriend and I are going to phuket, karon on 5th may for 2 weeks.

I am really worried as there was a programme recently on tv which made Thailand look dirty and dangerous! :(

Also I had been told that it will rain none stop in may!! Is this right? I hope not! We love the sun!

Sick of people tying to put us off! Please tell me they are wrong! :)

Thailand is not dirty and dangerous.. I mean, things are different here compared to the world you were born in,.. have you ever traveled anywhere before? Everywhere is different. I have lived here since 1999 and have 2 kids, and I assure you we are not dirty. You can go find dirty bits of you want to of course... Weather in May can be wet, yes, but can be hot and sunny, take what you get...

Hi me and my partner are travelling to phuket on the 10th august. We wanted a hot beach holiday! is it likely to be colder and rainy?
also can you recommend any quite secluded beaches near phuket?
thanks

Blogger Jamie Monk in Phuket :

It won't be cold, even if it's raining. August you can certainly expect some rain, but it might be only in the night.. you can get great weather, or you might have a couple of cr*ppy days with rain most of the day - these are shopping days or massage days or watching a movie day, or watching-the-rain-and-getting-drunk days :)
