Lazing on a Sunday afternoon (in Phuket)

As January draws to a close, the weather in Phuket is just about as we'd expect. Sunny, warm, the occasional rain or thunderstorm in the evening, calm seas, light winds. In fact it gets harder to report anything on the weather blog, as every day is the same! Low season is way more exciting, you never know what's going to happen!

There was some rain on Saturday night, and it fell according to Sod's Law - just as I was shutting up the office. So I had to wait it out with a cold beer at the nearest watering hole (something Patong is not short of).

Today (Sunday) has been great. Had a swim / splash about with the kids in the morning at our local pool, followed by a leisurely lunch at The Beach Bar in Cape Panwa, then a few more drinkies, and a slice of apple pie at Friendship Beach. The photo below is taken at Friendship Beach - it's a bungalow resort and restaurant on the beach between Chalong and Rawai.

Sunny January in Phuket

The fine weather continues. What more can be said? We are getting into that time of year when you can more or less guarantee sunny skies, calm seas, toasty days, great diving...From now until early May is the best time to be here (if you like it hot). So how can I get a cold and a throat infection? I hate feeling unwell. January is all but gone, where does it go. Where does old time go?

I took a quick walk down on Patong Beach this afternoon a little before sunset, as the beach chairs and umrellas were being packed away and a few sun worshippers were getting their last rays of the day.

Meanwhile, many miles away in another world called "England"...This is the view my parents had from their house yesterday. The white colour is caused by "snow". I had to look it up - SNOW.

Sunny Weekend in Phuket

Nothing new here...Saturday was warm and sunny in Phuket the kind of day that would lead to "Phew! What a Scorcher!" headlines in the UK, but passes unnoticed here. There was the regular rain shower in the evening.

Sunday has been lovely. I was hoping for a lie in, but at 7am my daughter was awake, turned off our fan, drew back the curtains and said "It's Light!". The sky was blue, but some Sundays even a blue sky can't tempt me. I pulled the curtains shut again...

We ate lunch at the Beach Bar in Cape Panwa. It's a very relaxing little place, very simple, nothing flash, quiet and safe. Long may it stay that way.

19th January - More Sun

Today was one of those days when you wish you could be out diving and not in an office. Not office weather. Diving weather. Another Be Ee Ay Utiful day in Phuket. View below is across the "city" of Patong in the evening.

Meanwhile, English cricket did another impersonation of a Dodo. I had the BBC web site on in the background and each time I checked back I saw this:

WICKET!

My final thought, TFIF. Not that it matters as I have to work on Saturdays.

Sun is Shining Weather is Sweet

Well, sun was shining most of the time for the last 2 days. There has been some evening rain. I left my motorbike helmet upside down yesterday..bad move. Soggy helmet. Yuk. The days are warm, and there's a little shower in the evening. As you may expect in a tropical environment. Yesterday was a lovely day, but we had some strong rain in the evening that had me dashing outside to shut windows. Today was a lovely day too, with just a spit of rain after dark.

I stopped at Patong Temple in the morning - I have added it to the Temples section on my other blog. It's a little haven of quiet at the entrance to Patong. Here's a photo of today's blue skies over Patong Temple:

Mid January - Mostly Sunny

Quick summary of the last few days...I don't like to do summaries and am not a big fan of weather sites that just say: 15th January - Sunny with light cloud cover, 30 degrees, calm... Oh darn, I just did it, for that was indeed the weather for the 15th.

Continuing in the same vein...

The 16th and 17th (that's today) were very similar. Started hazy, became beautiful sunny days and then had a big old thunderstorm in the evening. Yesterday was "Teachers Day" in Thailand, a school holiday. My wife took the kids along with some friends to Dino Park in Kata Beach to play mini golf. Eek! I have never done it, although I have eaten the Dino Burgers a couple of times - very good, very large, suitable for Fred Flintstone types.

Today I took a walk along Patong beach road to find some CD's. I don't think they were original (he said innocently) as I only paid 60 Baht each for them and had to walk down a passageway to a locked room behind a tailors to find them... You don't think they could be copies, do you?

I found the new one way system in Patong easy to handle. Who knows if it will work in the long term, but at least they are trying!

Sunny weekend

The weather stayed good on Saturday evening so we had our little kid's birthday party with way too much food as usual - everything from BBQ Chicken to Potato Salad to Massaman Curry to Khanom Jin .... and tonight's dinner has been potato salad and chicken again.... It was a lovely bright and warm Saturday evening. The sunset time in Phuket does not vary too much through the year. Right now it's setting about 6:30pm, and we have light until nearly 7pm.

Today (Sunday) was a slow start, a long lie in. My wife's family was here from Chumphon and we drove up with them as far as Phang Nga, where we stopped at the monkey cave which was all full of garbage. Yesterday was children's day in Thailand and there had obviously been a LOT of people there the day before. One imagines the local council workers will clear up tomorrow. There were some monkeys playing around the water. They seemed to be enjoying a refreshing dip. It's a warm night tonight, still around 27 degrees. The day has been windless and a bit hazy.

January rolls on...

The last few days have all been "nice". Winds are light, nights are not cool, days are sunny and warm, though we've had some rain in the late afternoon and evening for the last 2 days. We're having a little birthday party today for my 2 year old son, so we are praying for sun. Things are looking good right now.

After the rain comes sun

Sunday was an unfortunate blip. We are now back to blue skies here in Phuket. The weather is a funny old thing. Predicting anything more than a vague trend is the work of fools. Nevertheless, should you be the kind to worry, you can find plenty of weather tools and links on the left side of this page <<<<

I actually enjoyed Sunday, despite the clouds and rain. Good views, time with the family and great food. Now its back to the daily grind...

Yesterday was dryish - a light drizzle in the late afternoon that missed me as I headed out of Patong. Today was clear and bright from the word go. Lovely day. I took a detour on the back road over Patong (well, if you call Nanai Road the back road, then I took the "back back" road, otherwise called Hasip Pee road and in fact there is a "back back back" road that I have only followed once - see here). Hasip Pee Road winds over the hillside and over the last few years a few more buildings have gone up along the way. It's a quiet road with views over Patong:

After work it was gardening time (well, actually we have a gardener come once a month, which sounds decadent, but we pay him just 300 Baht). Me and the wife then tidied up a few things and repotted a couple of lotus plants. Our garden is full of plants and flowers (see more here - Phuket In Bloom).

One of our flowers....

Hope you had a nice day!

Another Year

So, it's 2007. Look around? Notice any change? Well, it's just a number. It doesn't change the seasons, doesn't change the sun, the rain, the moon, the clouds, the stars. The date is just there so we can categorise our lives and plan our days. Before we had calendars, you had to say - "We will meet 3 moons from hence at sundown". Life was governed by the natural rhythm of life. 2007? Pah!

The last few days have been warm but hazy, with the sun breaking out by mid afternoon. No rain...until today. Mornings are cool, the air is fresh. Even the ocean is cooler than normal, due to the El NiƱo effect so they say.

Today started grey, carried on grey and was rather damp by late afternoon, but we made the most of the day, heading to Nai Yang Beach, then along the very nice winding coast road to Naithon and Layan beaches before eating a very late and very delicious lunch at Chili, a little restaurant right on the main airport road, a bit north of the bypass road, where a friend of ours cooks great food. A bit of rain and grey sky shouldn't stop you from enjoying the day!

Cold Mornings. Winter in Phuket.

Yesterday morning the temperature was a staggeringly, bone chillingly cold 21°C. I near froze on my bike, prompting me to wear a fleece jacket this morning (but it was warmer, about 24°C). Yes, I do keep a fleece for emergencies. Can't recall the last time I wore it, I had to dig it out of a box under a shelf.

Otherwise yesterday was sunny but distinctly chilly (if you're a local). Maximum only around 30°C, but felt cold when I rode home at 4pm. Today has started clear and bright. Looks like it's gonna be a beaut.

Cricket News: The England Cricket team continually redefines the word "Collapse". Ending yesterday on 234-4, they were all out for 291. Aside from a brave but doomed knock by Fred Flintstone, the final 5 contributed 4 (four) runs. Looking like the Aussies will get their whitewash, and England have no chance of revenge until 2009.

Happy New Year!

The sun shines for new year. Well, a kind of hazy sunshine really. Yesterday was clear and blue, though, as was the day before. On Saturday we went for a walk on Bang Wad Dam in the evening. It's a place close to where we live that's popular with locals who go for some exercise or to sit and have a picnic.

Yesterday we tried a new place to eat lunch (well, actually new for me - my wife and kids had been there with some friends one time) - it's called The Beach Bar, and it's down Cape Panwa near the Novotel. Very quiet, and inexpensive too. More about this place on my Phuket Blog: "The Beach Bar".
